Weather
Seasons changing sometimes is not as noticeable in Florida due to our location in relation to the equator. However, I am in northern German which would be similar to the latitude of Ketichan, Alaska or northern Maine. Granted, the winters are not as harsh as Alaska or Maine but the daylight hours are similar. Tomorrow, the sun will rise around 4:45am and the sun will set around 10pm. Recently, daylight begins around 4:20am and it remains light until around 10:30pm.
The temperatures are milder than the same latitudes in North America during the winter and similar during the summer months.
When I arrived during the middle of May, the temperature was much warmer than a typical May. In fact, everywhere I have traveled since arriving in Europe, they have reported a colder winter and an immediate change in early May to summer weather. Today the temperatures are considered normal for the season. The low was 55 degrees F and the high was 75 degrees. Several days the highs have reached mid to upper 80’s and that is very warm for the area, and surprisingly it feels warmer than the same temperatures in Florida. The humidity is 58% in Bremen versus 100% in Orlando, Florida today. I have no air conditioning in my apartment and that is common. I do however have a heating unit in the living space and another in the bathroom. On warm days, I leave the windows open for air flow. Since I am in the basement level, bugs tend to enter my room when the windows are open so I constructed and hung a screen over the windows to allow me to leave the window open but to keep bugs out. Most homes do not utilize screens over their windows so I had to be careful not to hang anything that would be obtrusive or permanent. I also purchased a fan for better air flow for very warm days.
I have found that blue jeans and a t-shirt type top with a fleece jacket is versatile enough to plan to wear everyday.
