Walking Tour
The walking tour I took yesterday was really good. I would recommend it for someone coming to Bremen. We met in the old part of town by the Glockenspiel house. At 3pm, the bells started chiming and part of the wall rotated to show famous sea/boat explorers (I say /boat because Robert Fulton was in there and he invented the steam boat, but he did not do much exploring). We had some candy from a local shop, which was very similar to the hard candies that you can get in Harry Potter World at Universal. The tour guide also told us about stories that involved people from Bremen. Robinson Crusoe’s father was from Bremen; in one of the oldest vampire movies, the vampire came through Bremen; and most famously, the Grimm Brothers’ “The Town Musicians of Bremen”, which has a statue depicting the animals, even though the animals never get to Bremen in the story. The tour guide told us about the government and how it works and pointed out the different government buildings. He brought us to a church that I had not been in before (it was a Lutheran church that had been Calvinist and Catholic before). It was interesting because it had a swing inside so you could lay down and feel closer to the heavens. The tour guide also told us that the reason why the key is the symbol of Bremen is because the key is the symbol of St. Peter and the Bremen Cathedral is dedicated to St. Peter. We walked down to the river and the tour guide pointed out some boats: one was a boat made at the end of World War II that was made out of concrete, one boat is now a restaurant and theater, and the Alexander von Humboldt was used in advertising for Beck’s so it is famous all over Germany. I know there is more that I am forgetting, especially about specific buildings and places. It was fun to walk around the old part of town, and I feel like I learned a lot.
